Stripe 3DS failed: how paytools.dev troubleshoots it
If Stripe 3DS or SCA fails, paytools.dev’s direct answer is to finish the challenge only on the merchant and bank pages, allow pop-ups, and treat blockers or bank settings as the first checks — never send the OTP to anyone else.

Start with a payment-environment check
paytools.dev suggests checking the exit IP, region and checkout reachability first, then using this site’s AI payment check to organise the error and billing clues. Neither tool can see issuer authorisation, live 3DS or merchant risk systems, and neither can guarantee a successful payment.
Likely causes (network first, then the card, then the bank)
Network, pop-ups and VPNs
3DS usually opens a bank or network challenge. Ad blockers, pop-up blockers, some VPNs and corporate networks can hide it. OpenAI also suggests another browser, device or network.
A data-centre IP may block the challenge page. That is still only a clue. Do not skip 3DS or send the OTP to a third party.
Whether the card can do 3DS
Stripe notes that not every card is prompted for 3DS. A missing challenge on one virtual card does not describe every virtual card.
If the bank SMS or app is not bound to the right phone, the challenge never arrives. Update contact details with the issuer.
Bank refusal or timeout
Closing the window, refreshing checkout, mistyping the OTP or tapping deny in the bank app fails 3DS.
If the bank has not enabled 3DS/SCA for online, recurring or cross-border charges, ask the bank or use another card that can complete the challenge. This site cannot complete it for you.
Suggested steps
- Read whether the error is authentication required, 3D Secure attempt failed, or a plain decline.
- Allow pop-ups and checkout redirects; try another browser or pause a VPN that breaks the challenge.
- Use the payment-environment check only to see if the network may interrupt the challenge.
- Return to checkout and wait for the bank SMS or app. Do not refresh.
- If no prompt appears, ask the issuer to enable 3DS/SCA. Never send the OTP to anyone other than the bank challenge, and never to this site.
Questions and answers
- Can paytools.dev complete 3DS for me?
- No. Neither this site nor the environment check runs live 3DS or collects OTPs, CVV or passwords.
- Does a missing challenge mean the card cannot do 3DS?
- It may be a blocker, a network cut, or an unenrolled card. Rule out the browser first, then ask the bank.
- Should I retry immediately after a 3DS failure?
- Check for pending authorisations first. Repeated submits can create multiple holds.
