Apple ID in-app ChatGPT subscription: paytools.dev splits the channels
If an Apple ID ChatGPT subscription fails, paytools.dev’s direct answer is that App Store IAP and chatgpt.com billing are separate, non-transferable channels — match the same Apple ID and ChatGPT account, and do not bypass limits by changing store region or using someone else’s account.

Start with a payment-environment check
paytools.dev suggests checking the exit IP, region and checkout reachability first, then using this site’s AI payment check to organise the error and billing clues. Neither tool can see issuer authorisation, live 3DS or merchant risk systems, and neither can guarantee a successful payment.

Network and store region
Whether ChatGPT IAP appears depends on the Apple ID storefront and whether OpenAI offers IAP there. That is not the same list as web checkout, but OpenAI’s warning about unsupported-region access still applies.
This page does not provide steps to change an Apple ID country, use another person’s payment method or fake a storefront.
Account linking, not a universal card fix
OpenAI says a mobile subscription is tied to both the Apple ID and the ChatGPT account signed in at purchase, and cannot move to another ChatGPT account. If you see “associated with another account”, sign into that account and restore.
Reinstalling does not unlink it. Web plans are managed at chatgpt.com and cannot be claimed with Restore purchases.
Apple billing and the bank
IAP uses Apple’s method (store credit or a card on the Apple account). The failure may sit with Apple, the bank or a Family Sharing payer, not an OpenAI 3DS modal.
If Apple charged you but ChatGPT still shows Free, use Settings → Account → Restore purchases. Refunds go through Apple.
Suggested steps
- Confirm whether you bought in the ChatGPT iOS app or on the web. Receipts and cancellation paths differ.
- Sign into the ChatGPT account used at purchase, then Restore purchases.
- Check that the Apple account payment method is valid; for Family Sharing, check the payer.
- The environment check only tells you whether the network interrupts the app or site. It cannot restore a purchase.
- If it still fails, follow OpenAI support or Apple’s subscription/refund pages. Do not send Apple passwords or OTPs here.
